The Kalka–Shimla Railway is one of India's great train journeys — a narrow-gauge line climbing 1,420 metres over 96 km through 102 tunnels. The toy train creaks through pine forests, past terraced fields and station masters with green flags. Book the Rail Motor or Vista Dome for the best views. It's slow, charming, and infinitely better than the highway if you're not in a hurry.
Board at Kalka or Shimla (runs both directions)
5–6 hour journey with station stops
Tunnel after tunnel — carry a light jacket
