First time in Spiti: what nobody tells you

Spiti is not Manali with more mountains. It's a high-altitude desert where villages sit above 3,800 metres, ATMs fail without warning, and roads close when a single landslide decides your weekend is over.
Acclimatisation is non-negotiable
Spend your first night in Kaza and do nothing strenuous. Headaches at Key Monastery are altitude, not dehydration alone. Chandratal looks close on the map — it's a full day on rough roads. Build in buffer days; Spiti punishes tight schedules.
Cash and fuel
Carry cash from Reckong Peo or Manali. UPI works in Kaza sometimes, not in Losar or Chandratal camps. Fuel pumps are sparse — fill at Rampur or Reckong Peo and top up whenever you see a working pump.
When to go
June to September is the window. Winter Spiti is for experienced drivers with proper vehicles, not a casual add-on. The landscapes are worth the preparation — go ready, or wait until you can.
